If you’re looking for the perfect seaside getaway in northern Germany, let me introduce you to one of my favorite places: Scharbeutz. I’ve visited this charming little town on the Baltic Sea countless times over the years, and although it has grown and changed, it has never lost the relaxed, welcoming atmosphere that keeps me coming back.
Every summer, Scharbeutz comes alive as visitors flock to the Baltic coast. It’s easy to see why. The beaches are stunning, with soft white sand, gentle sand dunes, and swaying sea grass creating a picture-perfect setting. Unlike rough ocean beaches, the Baltic Sea here is calm, shallow, and wonderfully family-friendly. The water is ideal for swimming, splashing around, and letting younger children safely enjoy the sea.
One of my favorite parts of spending a day at the beach is renting a Strandkorb (the iconic German beach chair). These oversized wicker chairs come with a protective hood for shade and comfortably fit three or four people. They’re incredibly cozy and perfect for relaxing with a good book or simply enjoying the sea breeze. They’re also very popular, so on sunny days it’s worth arriving early if you want to claim one.
The water during the summer is pleasantly warm while still refreshing enough to cool you off. It’s the perfect place to bring inflatable floats, paddle around in a small dinghy, or enjoy water games with family and friends. Between swims, you can simply stretch out on the sand, soak up the sunshine, or join in a game of beach volleyball or other classic beach activities. It’s the kind of place where it’s easy to lose track of time.
Away from the beach, Scharbeutz’s lively pedestrian promenade is the heart of the town. Filled with inviting cafés, stylish restaurants, boutiques, ice cream parlors, and local shops, it’s a wonderful place for an afternoon stroll. Despite its popularity, it never feels overwhelmingly crowded, making it easy to enjoy the relaxed coastal atmosphere.
Food lovers will have plenty to discover here. Many restaurants serve delicious northern German specialties, including Scholle (pan-fried plaice served with crispy potatoes and bacon) and Nordseekrabben, the famous small North Sea shrimp. Of course, you’ll also find everything from fresh seafood and juicy steaks to vegetarian and vegan dishes. Pair your meal with a local beer, a glass of wine, or a refreshing cocktail while enjoying views of the Baltic Sea.
Families with children will especially appreciate everything Scharbeutz has to offer. The town features excellent playgrounds, a pirate ship climbing area, and a variety of organized activities that keep younger visitors entertained throughout the day.
Even if the weather doesn’t cooperate, there’s no shortage of things to do. Modern indoor swimming complexes offer exciting water slides, multiple pools, and relaxing spa areas complete with saunas—perfect for spending a rainy afternoon.
If you’re feeling active, Scharbeutz has plenty of options. You can play tennis on traditional clay courts, challenge your family to a round of mini golf, rent bicycles to explore the beautiful Baltic coastline, or head out onto the water with a kayak or windsurfing board.
The surrounding area is also well worth exploring. Nearby towns are easily reached by car or bus and each has its own unique charm. One of my favorites is Timmendorfer Strand, which offers a livelier atmosphere, great shopping, entertainment, and a vibrant nightlife scene.
Whether you’re planning a relaxing beach vacation, an active family holiday, or simply looking for a peaceful place to unwind, Scharbeutz is a destination that truly has something for everyone. Summer is undoubtedly the best time to experience its beautiful beaches and outdoor lifestyle, but even during cooler months you’ll find plenty of attractions, cozy restaurants, and indoor activities to make your visit memorable.
